Onion Blossom
Today is my last day at the pediatric unit of Wishard Hospital in Indianapolis, and none of my co-workers is here, so it's quiet and I'm contemplative. I walked out to the garden this morning to say hi to the P.I.G. and to check on all the growing things there. Everything looks so fresh and green in the morning light. The photograph is an onion blossom in the main garden; I'm not sure if those are scallions or bunching onions.
We should be picking a truckload of tomatoes when we get back from our trip to Smith Mountain Lake in Virginia and Rural Hall, NC. I'm looking forward to seeing the S.O.'s brother and sister-in-law and their three fabulously beautiful and fun children, the oldest of whom will be going off to college in August. We'll spend some time out on the boat looking at all the humongous mansions, and I'll have time to spiff up this blog and do some leisurely reading in my sock monkey pajamas. We might even have a water balloon fight: Kids vs. Grownups. More than likely, I'll be on the kids' team. Of course, the S.O. and I will be doing some cooking for the family, and I'm sure I'll make a key lime pie for Dad. I'm thinking maybe we'll make our version of Tilapia Veracruz with Spanish rice; the kids will love that. A few years ago, in spite of some warnings that the kids might not like it, I made Shrimp Etouffée and they all loved it! We'll miss the S.O.'s sister, brother-in-law and nephew this year, but all the guys have a camping trip planned later in the summer in Montana. Sweet.
Then we're back on the road to visit an old friend of mine from New Orleans, an amazing singer who moved to North Carolina after Hurricane Katrina. Being from the Crescent City, she's a fabulous cook, of course, and I'm looking forward to her chocolate and lavender gelato! When we get back, I'll be starting a new career!
Don't forget to check out my niece's blog. You won't be sorry. http://passionfruitbutter.com/
